Jessie's Story

When Jessie was 9 years old, in November 2006, she used to sleep in this position.

This was damaging her chest and causing it to change shape. This also affected her spine which was developing into a severe scoliosis. We measured Jessie’s chest so that her Mum could see what was happening to it.

Jessie was under the care of surgeons at Great Ormond Street Hospital who wanted to operate on her spine every six months to straighten it. Her Mum was very worried as she did not believe Jessie would be strong enough for these operations. Jessie’s Mum asked if she could use night time positioning for a while to see if it would help Jessie’s body shape.

Jessie began sleeping on her back with some support.

By January 2007 she had made some remarkable improvements to her body shape!

Her Mum is very proud of what her and Jessie have achieved. Jessie’s scoliosis has also improved and the surgeons no longer want to operate on her at the moment. They believe that if Jessie and her Mum continue with this approach, they may not have to operate at all, or if they do, only once. This is fantastic news! Well done everyone!
