James' Story
We met James when he was 19 years old. James was born very premature, at 24 weeks. He was very frail and the doctors did not think he would survive.
James has Cerebral Palsy and he finds it difficult to control his body. When he was younger, he used to sleep on his tummy so he could control his arms.
James could hold himself up at this age and bear weight.
However, as time went on, James got trapped in his one sleeping position and it was damaging his body.
Caring for him was getting very difficult, He could not bear weight easily, he was not eating a lot, he was not sleeping well. His family were very worried about him.
At 19 James began to be provided with Postural Care. He was supported to sleep on his back. It took around 6 weeks and his family were very gentle and patient at introducing it. In under one year James’s legs straightened out a lot. He can weight bear again, he’s sleeping all night, and as his Mum says, ‘you can’t keep him fed now!’
James is doing fantastically!
His improved body shape has had a profound impact on his quality of life. For example, now he can ride camels! He could not have done this before.
James will continue to make improvements and he will always be supported to protect his body shape by his family and by us.
