Connor's Story
Providing Postural Care during the day and night protects body shape and helps people who find it difficult to move to stay healthy and happy.
Out of 8,760 hours of the year, someone with movement problems will spend approximately:-
1,140 hours in school or day care,
7,620 with the family
3,640 in bed
Connor is 10 years old and has Cerebral Palsy. He bike rides, plays football and roller blades but Connor’s Mum, Sam said that he was ‘walking in a sitting down position.’ Connor has had two operations to attempt to improve his posture and help to straighten his body.
Connor’s sleeping position had not been looked at before. Connor used to sleep like this…
Connor’s legs were bent and his hips were twisting to the side. His chest was distorting and his back was curved. Connor’s ribs were falling to the right. Using the Goldsmith Indices of Body Symmetry we measured Connor’s chest.
Connor started sleeping on his back in a supported position to keep his body straight. Over three months his chest has become symmetrical and wider and his body has made some big improvements! The Indices Measurements empirically prove that Postural Care has improved his body shape.
Sam, a registered General Nurse, Midwife and Occupational Health Nurse says Connor’s progress ‘has been witnessed with amazement. Connor is standing much straighter; he has grown over 2 inches. He is walking much better… he has a greater range of movement… his plastic splints have been reduced to short splints. Although in my and Connor’s opinion he walks much better without them.’ Connor feels much better, but we also have empirical proof that Postural Care is working for him. Using the Goldsmith Indices of Body Symmetry we can show how Connor’s chest shape has improved.
Connor and his family are very proud of their success! They have worked hard night after night and will continue to do so to help Connor to grow straight and healthy.
