NEW Postural Care Campaign www.mencap.org.uk/posturalcare

The Postural Care Action Group has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of good postural care for thousands of people with multiple disabilities. The group is made up of organisations including; Mencap, PAMIS, Postural Care Skills, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, the College of Occupational Therapists and the Royal College of Nursing.

What is Postural Care?

People who find it hard to move are most at risk of developing body shape distortions. This is because they often sit and lie in limited positions.  Postural care is about using the right equipment and positioning techniques to help protect and restore body shape. The earlier the intervention, the better - but it is never too late to start protecting someone's body shape.

What can you do?

Everyone who supports someone with multiple disabilities or commissions services for them needs to know about postural care. You can help spread the word. The materials below will help you to do this:

You can order copies of the booklet and the film from publications at Mencap:

About Postural Care CIC

We were delighted last year to become finalists in the Accolades 2010 Awards.  We are very proud to have been nominated and to be named a Highly Commended Organisation within our category, Most Effective Practice in Workforce Development Across Partner Agencies.

Our work has been developing for the past 15 years and we are very proud of the results achieved by families, self advocates and professionals working in partnership.  Recently this had led us to develop a national steering group with representation from family leadership groups, the Department of Health, The Royal College of Nursing, The Chartered Society of Physiotherapists, The Oxford Centre for Enablement, and the National Patient Safety Agency amongst others.

Combining professional experience with personal commitment, we are recognised as one of the most innovative teams; contributing to leading developments in government policy for people with learning disabilities and other groups within the NHS.

Our training courses are accredited through the National Open College Network, and we are audited every 6 months for quality assurance. Throughout 2010 we will be working on a national project initiated by Skills for Health as part of a Children's Workforce Development Council and Skills for Health work programme. We are developing training for practitioners and families to protect body shape and conservatively manage scoliosis through the safe use of therapeutic positioning.

More recently we have been developing services to support individuals with idiopathic scoliosis.

Our course textbook is available at £25 including VAT, with FREE postage within the UK.  Email Sarah@posturalcareskills.com to order your copy.  The book has six sections, Identification of need, Pain and consent, Physical Assessment, Therapeutic positioning at night, Achieving thermal comfort and a family led protection of body shape care pathway.

As a CIC we are also regulated by the Government CIC regulator to ensure our work is continually benefiting the communities we seek to support.
