Primum non nocere - First, do no harm

Postural care is gentle, respectful and effective to protect body shape, muscle tone and quality of life for people who find it hard to move.  It is driven by expert families and monitored by non – invasive outcome measures of body symmetry: the Goldsmith Indices.

The NSPCC Report of the National Working Group on Child Protection and Disability. It doesn’t happen to disabled children (2003) states ‘We still come across situations…where the child’s pain is not recognised; where abusive practices are seen to be necessary because of the child’s impairment’.

We believe that to carry out invasive practices without investing in families to provide postural care is logically indefensible.  PCSP (UK) Ltd campaigns to promote gentle, respectful therapeutic practices and outcome measures for people of all ages.

Protection of Body Shape is becoming a bit of a hot topic at the moment. It was recently noted in an independent inquiry by Sir Jonathan Michaels (prompted by Mencap’s Death by Indifference report) that Early interventions are not undertaken to prevent postural [distortions] from developing. Many families receive no support or advice about how to manage the sleeping position of their child and the Inquiry heard examples of cases where later wheelchair use and/or back surgery could have been avoided if effective early intervention had been provided.’

Without adequate support and training families are unable to protect their children, whether young or adult, from avoidable complications caused by body shape distortion. Our courses are designed to empower the family, and those within a person’s first circle of support, to effectively protect body shape.
